Every Calgary Board of Education (CBE) student is an individual with unique learning needs and interests. CBE¡¯s high schools provide a variety of learning and schooling options in order to capitalize on student strengths and help them achieve success in Grades 1012. To graduate students need to complete the requirements for either an Alberta High School Diploma or a Certificate of Achievement. A diploma is necessary to pursue post-secondary studies. The certificate program prepares students for direct entry into the world of work.

All CBE high schools offer the courses needed to satisfy the requirements of the diploma and certificate programs. In addition, three high schools specialize in the certificate program. Each school also has features and course offerings that make it unique. Most high schools are semester based. The semester break occurs at the end of January.

High school education in Alberta is organized on the basis of credits.Courses are assigned a credit value which reflects instructional time.(1 credit for 25 hours of instruction.) Usually five credits are assigned to courses that run for a full year or semester.Three credits are granted for courses in which classes run for a half year or half semester.Your high school can provide details on which courses are a full year and which are a half year. Students need a final mark of at least 50% to obtain the credits in a course and to proceed to the next course level. Students need to earn a minimum of 100 credits to graduate with an Alberta High School Diploma.Students who wish to work towards a diploma follow a course of study that includes some compulsory courses and some options.General courses and advanced courses are offered at each grade level.The compulsory course requirements for Grades 10, 11 and 12 are:

Career and Technology Studies (CTS) helps students to build daily living skills, investigate career options, use technology effectively and efficiently, and prepare for entry into the workplace and/or a post-secondary related program.Through CTS students gain basic competencies that are generic to any career area such as personal management and social skills.They also gain career-specific competencies that relate to a particular career strand.These strands encompass both goods-producing industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and construction, and service-producing industries such as business services, health services, and finance and insurance services.In each strand students move through introductory, intermediate and advanced level modules.The profiles in this directory list the CTS strands offered at each high school.

Fine Arts courses range from instrumental and choral music to drama and dance.The options available in these areas vary from school to school.Second Language options include French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Mandarin and Latin.These offerings vary from school to school.

Diploma Examinations - To obtain credits in certain Grade 12 academic subjects, students must write a provincial examination.Because successful completion of one or more of these examinations is required for a high school diploma, they are referred to as diploma examinations.Most students write their exams in January, June and August.| High
